Separable verbs in Thai, which correspond to the verb group meaning ‘cut’ or ‘sever’ in Korean, were analyzed and described in the following study. The study targets are 46 separable verbs collected from Thai dictionary published by Thai Council for Arts and Science. The study result showed that separable verbs in Thai have very strong transitivity and carry the meaning of lexical causative at the same time. Also, we found out that 38 verbs possess the characteristics of middle verb. We analyzed thematic roles of separable verbs to understand semantic characteristics of separable verbs. The result was that separable verb construction in Thai has the thematic role of agent, instrument and patient. Also, meanings of separable verbs in Thai was analyzed and classified into subcategories by grouping to describe different meanings of separable verbs based upon 8 constituent factors of meaning. It is not easy to understand accurate and detailed meanings of basic vocabularies like separable verbs, which are used frequently in daily life, because there are various factors which constitute the meanings and the vocabularies are also polysemy in many cases. I hope to provide useful materials for studying Thai linguistically and for Korean Thai learners to understand Thai in more details through this study.
