Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in aging apartment buildings, which account for a significant proportion of the building sector, is essential for achieving carbon neutrality. However, introducing emission reduction measures in buildings poses challenges due to difficult retrofitting and high costs, highlighting the need for prior evaluation. Therefore, this study assessed the potential for emission reduction by implementing energy efficiency improvements and heating electrification measures in aging apartment complexes. In the Bundang Parktown Apartments, the introduction of passive technology is expected to result in a maximum greenhouse gas reduction of 22.7%. When transitioning to a heat pump for heating, a reduction of 10.8% is anticipated. Furthermore, if both technologies are implemented, a reduction of 26.9% is projected. Due to climate change, greenhouse gas emissions are projected to increase by 12% by 2050, resulting in a 2% increase in reduction capacity for green remodeling and a 3% decrease for heating electrification. Moreover, the effectiveness of these measures may vary depending on regional conditions. In Daegu"s Seongseo District, in contrast to Bundang, the proportion of heating in the energy demand by end-use is lower, and the proportion of cooling energy demand is higher. Under these conditions, a reduction of up to 23% is expected when implementing both passive houses and heat pumps, which is 3.8% less than the reduction effect in the same scenario in Bundang. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the effectiveness of greenhouse gas reduction measures considering regional environments and climate change patterns.
