This paper analyzes the development of Korean ginseng trade with China and the commercial activities of ginseng merchants in the sixteenth century during the years of King Sonjo.
In the last decades of the sixteenth century, around the Imjin War(1592-8), a demand of Korean ginseng vastly increased in Ming China. Ginseng, which became to be known as having remedial effects, was in demand not only among the royal family and noble class but also among the gently and common class. With the influence of tile increased need and popularity of ginseng in China, there appeared a new ginseng-processed product, pa Sam(把蔘). Pa sam was a newly devised good of ginseng steamed, dried, and wrapped in regular size. It soon became one of tile main Korean exports to China thereafter.
Upon tile request from Choson government, chung-gang market began in Eui-ju area in 1593(the 26th year of Sonjo's reign). The market became tile principal place for the private trade of Korean ginseng going to China. Korean ginseng merchants, many of whom were from Seoul and Gaesong areas, were using the chung-gan gae-shi market to export ps sum in quantity to China. They bought up all ginsengs throughout tile country and exported them to China, making the most of their commercial networks. As a result, domestic price of ginseng in Korea unprecedentedly soared.
This condition resulted in the improvement of artificial cultivation of ginseng and the development of hongsam(ginseng steamed reel) trade in the late Chosen period. In short, these new phenomena derived from the expanded ginseng trade and extensive commercial activities of ginseng merchants during tile years of Sonjo's reign.
